Q. What is a prosthesis? A. A breast prosthesis is an artificial breast form that replaces the shape of all or part of the breast that has been removed. It fits into a bra cup, usually inside a pre-installed pocket or cotton cover. "Prostheses" is the word for more than one prosthesis. Most breast prostheses are made from soft silicone gel, encased in a thin film. But lightly weighted foam & other textiles are popular choices too. An expertly fitted prosthesis will assist you in regaining your confidence, without the need for further surgery.
Q. What should I wear after my surgery? A. Immediately after surgery, your specialist surgeon may recommend that you wear a compression bra to lessen the risk of developing lymphoedema - which is an accumulation of fluid (or lymph) in the soft tissue, with accompanying swelling. A front-fastening bra is essential at this time while you range of motion is limited. I stock these garments, and can fit you for your correct size. Optionally, a soft "puff" style form can be worn at this stage.
Q. How soon after surgery can I get a prosthesis? Once you have (in majority) healed after surgery, I can fit you with a breast form which will help you regain your balance, silhouette and confidence. You will have the very best choice available as I offer breast forms in a variety of shapes, sizes, weights & textures, which are suitable for everyday, leisure & swimming. Plus I stock beautiful and comfortable wire-free bras which are pocketed to hold the breast form securely in place.
Q. Will I be out-of-pocket for the cost of a prosthesis &/or bras? A. Eligible patients can claim up 100% of their prosthesis costs through Medicare or the Department of Veterans Affairs. Some Private Health Insurers may give a full or partial rebate towards your prosthesis &/or bras - but you should inquire with your fund as to your eligibility & rebate limit available.
